Common Treatment Areas

Eyebrows are called expressions in the theatre. Correctly shaped eyebrows provide balance to other facial features. "Exaggerated or misshapen eyebrows can actually distort facial features," states Shelby Owens, in her book About That Hair. One common mistake many people make is creating too wide a space between the eyebrows. Another is shaping the eyebrows too thin. Your electrologist is trained to correctly shape your eyebrows to create that carefree, beautiful look that is right for you.

Electrolysis in the underarm area is wonderful for women.

The apocrine glands secrete a milky liquid that exits through the hair follicle and produces the characteristic bad odor of perspiration when acted upon by skin bacteria.

When the hairs are permanently removed, the apocrine glands associated with the hairs dry up. Not only do you have the benefit of hairless underarms, but most of the perspiration diminishes and the odor is virtually eliminated.

No hair, no odor, "the bonus area."

Lip and Chin

Many women have unwanted hair on their lip, chin or jaw line. Electrolysis is the only way to remove hair permanently.

Heredity often plays a role in hair patterns. Certain genetic backgrounds are predisposed to increased facial hair such as Mediterranean and Scandinavian. This natural type of hair increase becomes more visible around puberty.

Fluctuations in hormones that cause an increase in androgens (the male hormone) can trigger excess hair in a male pattern e.g. lip, chin, breast, abdomen and bikini line. Often these fluctuations occur during puberty, childbirth or menopause. Eventually the hormones may return to normal levels and stabilize but once the hair is triggered to grow it remains until permanently removed.

Other causes for hair increase include stress, excess exercise, polycystic ovaries, adrenal problems or medication side effects. With all of these possible causes it is not a wonder that most females experience unwanted hair sometime in their life. It is a problem that most females share, but don't talk about. However, it should be discussed with your physician. They may recommend that you have your hormone levels tested to determine if any treatment is necessary.

Bikini Line

The bikini line is one of the most popular areas for electrolysis. Hormones produced by the pituitary gland trigger this natural hair growth at puberty. Temporary hair removal methods often irritate this sensitive skin causing a rash that is worse than the hair. Electrolysis is the only permanent solution to removing unwanted hair.

Clients wear a bathing suit or high cut underwear during treatment and many use EMLA, a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment. This anesthetic works very well when applied properly. EMLA is available by prescription only and must be acquired from your family physician or dermatologist.

Feet and Toes

All women have some fine hair on the tops of their feet and toes. It is not uncommon for women to have quite a few longer and darker hairs that they routinely shave. Fortunately, we can permanently remove these unwanted hairs. Now is the time to begin electrolysis so that next summer you can run to the beach or put on your sandals to reveal smooth, beautiful feet.
